South Walsham Canoe Hire & Kayak Hire
Reputedly the most picturesque of all the Broads, South Walsham Broad is home to otters and a vast array of other wildlife.
Located about a mile from the village of South Walsham this beautiful broad is split into two parts. The 'inner' broad is a privately owned nature reserve which can only be accessed by unpowered craft such as canoes. The 'outer' broad on the other hand is open to all craft and is connected to the River Bure by the mile long Fleet Dyke. From here it is an easy paddle to St Benets Abbey, the only monastery in England that wasn’t dissolved during the dissolution of the monasteries during Henry VIII reign and, a little further afield, Ranworth Broad where you can visit the Norfolk Wildlife Trust's visitor centre and Ranworth Church (climb the tower for the the best view over the broads!)
South Walsham Otters - Canoeists regularly see otters on South Walsham Broad. It is not certain how many live here but it is thought to be at least two, probably more. For the best chance of spotting an otter, paddle slowly and quietly keeping a look in the distance for the tell tale ripples and head poking above the water. For information about the latest sightings go to the South Walsham Broad Otter Watch web site.
